Whew!

Ursa made it through surgery like a champ. It was long. The tumor was big. We’ll just have to wait for what the pathologist says. But for now we are focused on getting her home and recovered from her amputation. I have lots of photos and thoughts over on my personal blog. If you have a second, I would love for you to hop on over and let me know if you have any words of wisdom as we prepare to bring her home this afternoon. They said that she’s struggling on slippery floors, but has been eating and evacuating, so that is good news.

Thank you all for you positive energy and love. It made yesterday better, despite all the nerves and fear.

  1. Such good news! So glad that Ursa did well and is right on target for where she should be. Already doing the potty stuff is a bonus.

Ursa will not feel so hot for awhile, but it will get better. You have little children so you can remind yourself of the early days when you questioned yourself. “Am I doing this right? Is she hurting? What does that cry mean? Am I cut out for this?” Actually, early parenthood kind of mimics this recovery period 🙂

It has always perplexed me that vets don’t put down rugs for these dogs after their surgery. Surely they know the equation: 4-3=fall down. I brought booties for Dakota to wear out of the hospital on the day he came home. The surgery team looked at me and I saw lightbulbs literally come on over their heads. For such smart people they sure had some blanks to fill in.

  2. Glad to hear Ursa’s out of surgery and on the road to recovery! She will be sent home with a bunch of anti-biotics and pain meds. Please keep in mind that these meds will make her a little “loopy”, and you may not see her personality for awhile. Try not to get too down; stay positive in front of her. Your days and nights will be stressful, as you’ll jump and freak out at every move and sound Ursa makes. Just take each minute as they come. Call your vet often if you have questions; that’s why they’re there. Keep us updated on Ursa’s progress, and post often in the forums if you have questions. We’ve all been where you and Ursa are now. Sending positive thoughts to Ursa for an uneventful recovery!

  4. WHAT A RELIEF! Just one night at the vet’s? This will be a piece of cake.

    Welcome home, beautiful Ursa-Girl.

  5. I would get a bunch of scatter rugs to put down. Our Golden, Emma still needs help from time to time when she is getting up. It has been 4 months since her amputation. Our downstairs looks tacky with all the rugs but if it helps her then I am o.k with that.
